Grade 2 - Pattern and the start of Abstraction

                                                        Term 1 and 2

Princess of Polkadots

PATTERN - Grade 2

My students learned the difference between organic and geometric shape and line in the creation of these Yayoi Kusama inspired paintings. We incorporated a variety of pattern in color and shape to keep our viewers interested in our work. We also brushed upon the concept of abstract art where ideas can be expressed with no attempt at "realism".

We saw a short video and viewed stills of a few of Kusama's "polkadot" and "net" artworks. My students comments were insightful and highly motivating for a great discussion of her work. I was pleased at the high degree of varied response and creativity!

And now for another approach to abstract art!

On another day we explored abstraction through simple shape, color, line and texture. Here are some examples of this one day exploration:

My students learned that a successful abstract artwork is measured by the same standards as any other artwork. A successful work of art is balanced, has a center of interest, and keeps the viewer interested for a long time! I love how each of these creations holds our attention in a different way. I hope you enjoy them as much as we have!
Thanks for stopping by!
