Students used a mirror to draw observed facial details. They added bodies and drew a background filled with texture and details. Everyone made their own personal artistic choices to create a beautiful collage, showing us something about themselves!

Grade 3 - Creating Textural Interest and Drawing from Observation

Term 1 and 2 

 Feathers - Not just fluff! 

Our 2nd Term Standard for Grade 3 began during Term 1. 
With this project we demonstrated "independence in drawing many observed details in our artwork". We also focused on the textures we observed, so this feather drawing satisfied two different term standards! In this case, we drew a feather, but we've started a new project observing our partner in a contour line drawing of their face and shoulders. The emphasis was less on observation and more on expression for this creative experience. Scroll down for some of our fun drawings just completed! 

We're learning the difference between actual and implied (or visual) texture. Our first task was to observe a feather and draw what we saw. Check out all the different ways our junior artists captured the textures of their feather. How wonderful that we all see things differently! 

Our next assignment was to compose a picture of a "place" - any place of our choosing - imaginary or from memory. We used at least 5 different implied textures in our pictures. Most of our classmates loved the freedom of this self-directed theme and the results were exciting to see!

then topping it off with some hilarious hair! 

Our Term 2 Report Card Standard for grade 3 ties right into both of these projects - our observed feathers above and our partner drawing below. The Standard reads "I can create artwork from direct observation". Of course this crazy hair project has been spiced up by the imaginative details added after our partner drawing 😉
